THE EFFECT OF A ‘SOCIAL’ DOSE OF ALCOHOL ON THE CENTRAL RETINAL SENSITIVITY AND FIXATION STABILITY Measured with the scanning laser ophthalmoscope

چکیده
Purpose: To evaluate the effect of a ‘social’ dose of alcohol on the central retinal sensitivity and fixation stability, measured with microperimetry using scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (SLO). Patients and methods: Eighteen subjects, nine males and nine females, were given alcohol in a ‘social’ dose, corresponding to 40 ml wine/70 kg/30 minutes. Alcohol level, visual acuity (VA), and contrast sensitivity were examined, and central retinal sensitivity and fixation stability were measured with SLO before and after alcohol intake. Results: There were no statistically significant differences in VA, central retinal sensitivity or contrast sensitivity before and after alcohol intake. A significant difference in fixation stability was found before and after alcohol intake. There was no difference between males and females regarding the instability in fixation. Fixation stability was more affected by alcohol in six of the subjects than in the others. Conclusions: The central retinal sensitivity was not consistently affected by a small dose of alcohol. In contrast, the fixation stability significantly deteriorated, and a horizontal instability could be seen. No correlation was found between alcohol level and fixation instability, and the decrease could not be explained by the well-known sex difference in alcohol tolerance, thus the reason for this inter-individual difference could not be determined in the current study. Further investigations are needed to evaluate the relevance of fixation stability for visual function and the reasons for the inter-individual difference in alcohol tolerance.

Scanning laser densitometry and color perimetry demonstrate reduced photopigment density and sensitivity in two patients with retinal degeneration
PURPOSE To test the feasibility of scanning laser densitometry with a modified Rodenstock scanning laser ophthalmoscope (SLO) to measure the rod and cone photopigment distribution in patients with retinal diseases. METHODS Scanning laser densitometry was performed using a modified Rodenstock scanning laser ophthalmoscope. The distribution of the photopigments was calculated from dark adapted ...

PURPOSE To compare microperimetry using the scanning laser ophthalmoscope (SLO, Rodenstock, Germany) and the recently introduced Micro Perimeter 1 (Nidek Technologies, Italy). DESIGN Prospective comparative observational study. METHODS Fundus perimetry with static threshold perimetry was performed using the SLO and the MP1 in 68 eyes of 40 consecutive patients with different retinal disease...
متن کاملLandmark-driven fundus perimetry using the scanning laser ophthalmoscope.
PURPOSE To present a new method of performing scanning laser ophthalmoscope perimetry that compensates for eye movements so that the correct retinal location is tested even if fixation changes. This allows for accurate testing of patients with central scotomas and for repeating testing longitudinally at the same retinal locations even if central fixation is lost. METHODS The operator views th...

AIMS/BACKGROUND Recently a commercially available scanning laser Doppler flowmeter has been produced, which provides two dimensional maps of the retinal perfusion. The aim of the present study was to investigate the reproducibility and the sensitivity of these measurements. METHODS 16 healthy subjects were randomised to inhale different gas mixtures of oxygen and nitrogen in a double blind cr...
متن کاملVisual Function and Cortical Organization in Carriers of Blue Cone Monochromacy
Carriers of blue cone monochromacy have fewer cone photoreceptors than normal. Here we examine how this disruption at the level of the retina affects visual function and cortical organization in these individuals. Visual resolution and contrast sensitivity was measured at the preferred retinal locus of fixation and visual resolution was tested at two eccentric locations (2.5° and 8°) with spect...
